Vocaloid fans and Twitter users had a heated discussion on what pronoun we should use for VOCALOID.
This is the conversation that I had with my English teacher when I was giving a presentation on VOCALOID.
I: “She is…”
Teacher: “No, vocaloid is a synthesizer, machine. “It” is”
The Twitter user insisted using “she” to refer to VOCALOID, but his teacher kept correcting him to use “it” instead. The below are what other Twitter users think.
I personally believe the teacher is wrong. Sometimes female pronouns are used for machines. We should use “she”, especially since VOCALOID’s most popular character is Miku.
Hold on a sec. VOCALOID also has male voices. If people want to be politically correct, it’s understandable that people refer to VOCALOID as “it” or “this”.
If we use “she”, that means we are giving them a right and entitlement to get paid. (seriousface)
VOCALOID can be “it” because it is an object?
There are various opinions such as “Machine can be treated as female. The VOCALOID has a character such as Miku Hatsune, then “she” should be used.”, “Female pronoun can be used for cruisers and yachts”, “VOCALOID is a thing, so should it be “it”?”, etc.
Do you think VOCALOID should be referred to as “it” or “she”?
